Fonts and Grammar

You should always be careful with your grammar and the fonts that you are using. In a portfolio, you want your drawings and designs to speak for themselves, but other times you are going to need some sort of description to fully show what you want to do. Due to the little amount of text that will be shown in an architectural portfolio, mistakes in spelling and grammar will be easy to spot. Whenever working with multiple texts, always put them through a grammar and spelling checker, because a misspelt text may seem unprofessional to some employers.
By using too many different fonts, you may seem childish and therefore not very professional. You should always focus down on the number of fonts that you use, and by using fonts that are easy to read and not too overwhelming.

It is a very important skill that is needed in the architectural world, as many companies may want you to write a report about a particular project or may want you to write out statements for your projects. Your descriptions and samples will be the first thing that companies would want to read, so your writing must be well-written and professional. On top of your architectural portfolios with your projects, you will also need a cover letter and resume for your jobs, therefore having good spelling and grammar will be very important.
Some key points to have when writing anything:
- Have a trusted friend read and/or edit it - the more the merrier
- Use your own voice and read your own text aloud, if it sounds awkward and messy when you read it, there is a good chance the professionals will too
- Ensure that you are using excellent spelling and grammar, double-checking with a grammar and speller checker
While writing anything, the text should be representing yourself. It is YOUR writing that the employers are going to be reading, so what you write should demonstrate your own professionalism and your ability to work in their firm.
